ACUPUNCTURE

What is it?

A form of therapy, in which fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body, for pain relief, reduction of swelling and scar tissue. It often takes several sessions in close succession for the effects to build.

How it works

The needles stimulate underlying nerves which send messages to your spinal cord and midbrain. The needles will be left in for some time – from 10 to 30 minutes. Your physiotherapist will explain the procedure in detail and will be following the clinical guidelines of the Physiotherapy Acupuncture Assoc of NZ (PAANZ – a sub-group of the NZ Society of Physiotherapists)

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is generally very safe. Serious side effects are very rare. You will be constantly monitored by your Physiotherapist while receiving treatment.
Only single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used in the clinic.
